Sandra Waszyk is a paper cutting artist who transforms single sheets of paper into intricate, hand cut silhouettes. Using only a craft knife, she creates delicate and elegant compositions that balance precision with playfulness. The process is deliberate and irreversible. This physical constraint is central to the work, grounding humor, absurdity, and digital chaos in something real, fragile, and permanent.
Active in Virginia in the Washington DC area, Switzerland, and the Pacific Northwest, Sandra draws inspiration from each place she has lived as well as her background as an architect. During her time in Switzerland, began exploring the traditional art of scherenschnitte, or paper cutting, alongside the influence of the Dadaist art movement, both of which continue to shape her approach and sense of humor. Through her work, she invites viewers to laugh, linger, reflect, and spark conversation.
When not cutting paper, Sandra enjoys good coffee, her dogs, a well made beer, and teaching Zumba. She is also known for quietly hiding free miniature artworks in strange and unexpected public places, believing that art is born in the mess and chaos of real life, not a clean blank wall.
Her original and limited edition works are held in private collections from Brazil to Germany, and can be found at the Workhouse Arts Center, Bunnyman Brewery, and various art fairs and events including at the Swiss Embassy. She also loves to share her craft through papercutting workshops. Her ultimate goal remains simple: to create work that invites connection, encourages reflection, and makes room to laugh at the absurdity of it all.
